Tech Tip: Opening a CD/DVD Drive Manually

Forum Discussion - Tech Tip: Opening a CD/DVD Drive Manually - 1 post(s)

Like any piece of machinery, at some point, your CD/DVD drive will probably get stuck for one reason or another.  Of course, when it sticks, you’ll have an important disk in there (like your OS restore disc) stuck in the drive.  Fortunately, there is a way for you to get the CD/DVD out of the drive.  All you need is a paperclip.

NOTE: Before trying the following steps, we recommend you reboot your computer first.  Often times, the drives will stick because either the PC or Windows thinks the drive is in use.  If a reboot has not fixed the issue, try the following:

  • Straighten out one end of the paper clip.
  • Turn the power off to your computer. (While this is not necessarily required, we always encourage having no power to the PC before doing any tasks related to the hardware, as you could short something out).
  • On the CD/DVD drive, there is a small hole (sometimes near the eject button).
  • Place the straightened out end of the paper clip inside the hole on the CD/DVD drive.  It doesn’t have to go in far, you’ll feel it hit something.  If you push in a little, you’ll see the CD/DVD drive start to open.
  • Once opened far enough, grab the CD/DVD drive with your fingers and pull the drive open.
  • Take out your CD/DVD.
  • Push the drive closed and start your computer back up again.

If the drive doesn’t open for some reason, then you may want to have someone take a look at it to see if you can recover the CD/DVD.  Chances are if it wont open at all, you’ve got a more serious problem (and the drive is probably done for anyway).
