This is a great article that I found earlier today that does a pretty fair job of explaining the basic premises of the Windows registry, DLL files, drivers, the User Account Control and the Group Policy Editor.  With a fair knowledge of these tools, you can become quite the power user in a Windows environment (assuming you have the ability to access them).
