Heard of this site before but never gave it a try until now. Would have been nice for when I was formatting my system drive every 6 months, before Windows 7 came along.

Haven't seen that kind of unit before. What I like about that one is it uses a lot less cable than the one I have. It does have a lot good reviews, too. Well, now I know of a backup in case my current one ever dies (it getting to be about 4 years old now).

As I mentioned above, what I really like about this is to be able to run XAMPP off of it to be able to do web development from anywhere. The only catch is that you have to start the services before you do anything, but thats not that big of a deal. Start the services and you have a full WAMP stack ready to go. Keep in htdocs all of the things you're working on (making sure to back them up on occasion) and you're off and running.

Nice find, Tim! I really like the idea of this program. I'll have to give this a try sometime, as I'm sure I could make great use of it.

I've had terrible luck with a rosewill and another brand of these devices. I recently paid about twice as much for this one, seeing that it has amazing reviews:

So far, I'm happy. Sure hope it lasts many many years.

One other thing to note here. Editing the registry is dangerous if you dont know what you're doing. If you dont feel comfortable performing the above mentioned steps, you should hesitate from doing so and call your local tech guru to help you out. It might be helpful if you had a backup, but if you are in this situation, you may not have one (although I would argue that you should always have a good backup before doing things like this, but I digress).

They wont always give them to you though. Thats the caveat, although it really depends on the license agreement. Philosophically, you should be able to get the original Windows CD/DVD and not the restore, but if they give the ability to restore the system, that MAY be good enough, from their perspective. That's all part of the issue of buying a pre-built system. Fortunately, there are other solutions out there to solve this issue, so if you cant get the Windows CD/DVD, then there are options for you.

That's true, if you don't have your discs, you won't have much luck. That's another reason why I tell as many people as I can that if you're ordering a prebuilt system, and the manufacturer offers it, tell them that you want your Windows installation disc (and don't settle for just the recovery CD).

It just dawned on me that the other requirement for the above solution is that you MUST have your Windows installation CD/DVD. If you dont have this, then this solution doesnt work and you're left with searching online for a way to recover.

This is a good option. Ive also found that the Offline NT Password and Registry Editor works well for this purpose. http://pogostick.net/~pnh/ntpasswd/

The right answer, at least before taking a machine off the domain, is to make sure if you dont know what the local password is to get back onto the system that you reset it before taking the computer off the domain. I've been hit by this bug a couple of times though and dont always remember to do this step. Either way, its always good to have a backup plan. What I like about the above utility I mentioned is that it provides you with the ability to reset the password on accounts that exist. You still have to boot up the system using some kind of boot cd, but you dont really have a lot of options here.
